Homeland Security Training

Anyone who is seriously considering homeland security training will need to think carefully about what educational route they would like to follow. Universities, community colleges, and specialized colleges all offer courses related to this field of study. Training can also be obtained from some employers, through distance or online courses, or through the military. Because it still a relatively new field of study, at least as a focused study subject, many different approaches are possible. Think carefully about where you envision yourself working after graduation and compare what different schools have to offer.

Most universities do not yet offer a homeland security degree, although more will probably develop one in the near future. For now, students choose other majors, such as sociology, psychology, computer science, or even biology, and include relevant courses to build a program of homeland security training. A student might focus on terrorism or bioterrorism, computer network security, international finances, forensics, or some other area of interest. Some universities offer certificates in specific areas that can be obtained individually or added to a degree program.

Community colleges and specialized colleges typically offer homeland security courses that train first responders. They graduate emergency medical technicians, fire fighters, police officers, hazardous materials cleanup and disposal specialists, security guards and other professionals trained for specific types of employment. These types of homeland security training are not as limiting as they might appear however: professionals with these skills can work in many related types of employment.

A graduate with a homeland security degree or certificate can look forward to a job market with many and diverse types of employers. Most industries and companies have a homeland security initiative, while those that have specific security issues or provide security services employ a large number of people with homeland security training. Benefits and salaries vary widely throughout these employers but are likely to become more competitive for candidates with homeland security courses as they become more in demand.

Research both prospective educational opportunities and preferred employers before committing yourself to an educational pathway in homeland security training.

Is It Un-Cool to be Smart in School

It appears that in high school these days it is somewhat uncool to smart. This is quite problematic because it affects the future of America and it is for this reason that an online think tank recently addressed this issue as it discussed the need for more mentoring among teenagers. One online think tank member stated;

“One factor is the popular theme in middle and high schools that it’s somehow uncool to be smart - when the reverse is actually true.”

This is a real problem. It has a lot to do with social conditioning and roll models. For instance look at Paris Hilton and her TV demeanor. Kids are watching this aren’t they; it is a real problem. Yet if you really look closely, the marketing is brilliant and anything but stupid. It is too bad that we do not teach kids and show them that being smarter and achieving more in academics will increase the chances for success in later life. It is almost as if we need to show them a before and after picture of the screw off now and what they look like later in life.

You see if we do not help our children see the value in hitting the books early on, it will be much more difficult to get them to understand why they need to go to college and what they must do to achieve more. If they take it as all fun and games and do not get me wrong that is a nice age to be without a lot of responsibility, however they need to take their future more seriously. Mentoring maybe the key here. Perhaps you will think on it for me and consider this in 2006.
